An affair rarely happens in a vacuum. If you're facing one — whether it's already happened or you suspect it might — a few honest things worth sitting with.
-
1
Understand why it happened. An affair is rarely only about the third person — something in the relationship usually needed attention long before.
-
2
Decide if you both want to rebuild. Both people have to actually want it, not just agree to try.
-
3
Expect it to take time. Trust rebuilds slowly, in small consistent actions, not a single apology.
-
4
Get outside help. A counselor experienced with infidelity specifically can help more than either of you alone.
-
5
Be honest about what you need to move forward — transparency, distance from the other person, real accountability.
-
6
Give yourself permission to walk away if rebuilding isn't what you want. Staying isn't automatically the stronger choice.
Whatever you decide, do it with clear eyes rather than in the heat of the moment. A counselor can help either way — whether the goal is rebuilding, or moving forward separately.
